Introducing a new Substack: Craft + Practice
A focus on creative process and notable Catholic writers
Thanks to Creative License subscribers for sticking with me during a period of silence. In the past year, I’ve unpublished more than I’ve published, feeling a need for greater online privacy.
Still, I’ve been busy—reflecting, hibernating, writing. This spring, I’m excited to launch a new Substack that’s more outward-looking, with helpful content and encouragement for my fellow Substack creators. It’s called Craft + Practice.
Here’s the “About” page:
I’m an essayist, occasional film and book critic, and novelist. I’ve also worked in journalism and research.
In Craft + Practice, we’ll discuss a wide array of books, essays, podcasts, and writer interviews that teach/model a consistent and fruitful writing life. We start from the Catholic premise that writing can be a vocation, important both to the writer’s spiritual life and the culture at large.
Your comments and feedback are encouraged! The artist’s journey is a long pilgrimage, best done with company, and we can all learn from each other.
As of today, three posts are up:
Three Popes and a Poet on Writing: It’s a vocation, not a vacation. (4/14/26)
What is Resistance? A Catholic framework for the writer’s enemy. (4/21/26)
Flannery O'Connor on Insufferable Writers: Can a lazy, arrogant writer with no ideas be redeemed? (4/28/26)
I hope you will hop right over and subscribe to Craft + Practice, as Creative License will be relatively quiet.
Thank you for reading and see you on the other side!
